Project details

Do you have a strong advocacy for women’s empowerment? Join International Volunteer HQ and become a volunteer for our Young Moms Support Project in Porto, Portugal. Make a meaningful difference in the lives of socially excluded women in the country by advocating for their power and autonomy.

What to expect and how you'll make an impact

Supporting young moms is crucial for fostering healthy and thriving families, providing them with guidance and resources to navigate the challenges of single parenting.

This project aims to create a safety network for mothers over 13 years of age who lack family support. You will be involved with developing technical learning and training programs that help them to become independent.

You will get the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in providing support for single, young moms, from caring for babies, crafting nutritious meals, and learning about their stories to create meaningful connections. As a volunteer, you also get involved in teaching basic English to boost their communication skills that help them integrate into society.

As a volunteer, your responsibilities will be diverse and meaningful. They may include, but are not limited to;

  • Looking after babies
  • Preparing meals
  • Talking and connecting with the mothers
  • Providing basic English education to improve their language skills
  • Setting up educational games and activities
  • Designing and implementing completely new extracurricular activities or supporting existing ones
  • Facilitating workshops, such as arts and crafts, home economics, or other skills you may have.

Your involvement offers more than just support; it paves the way for these young moms to become self-reliant and confident, making motherhood an easier journey for them.

Gender equality is not only a fundamental human right, but a necessary foundation for a peaceful and sustainable world. Nearly 60% of women work in the informal economy, which puts them at greater risk of falling into poverty. Education and long-term employment opportunities are key to combating this.

I gained a lot of experience. I really enjoyed working with kids, and had a lot of fun with them. The program taught me how to manage and communicate with children. I really lacked that knowledge before, so I’m grateful for that incredible opportunity to be able to participate in a Youth Support program.
