Andean Art Class
Immerse in a unique artistic experience where history, color, and creativity converge. In this workshop, you'll have the opportunity to choose two activities that interest you the most and connect through your art: a traditional Andean mask, an Andean amulet, a painting inspired by the landscapes and symbols of the Andes, or creating a recycled card or postcard decorated with dried flower petals.

Guided by experts, you'll learn techniques to capture the colors, shapes, and patterns characteristic of the Andean worldview. While painting and decorating, you'll also hear local stories and ancestral myths that will deepen your understanding of the cultural significance behind each element you choose to create. Andean masks, used in celebrations and ceremonies, symbolize spiritual connection and protection. Amulets represent energy and tradition, while paintings capture the essence of Andean landscapes and symbols. The recycled card or postcard decorated with dried flowers offers a unique way to express your creativity while respecting the environment, making it a meaningful addition to the workshop. This workshop is an opportunity to develop your creativity and connect with Andean culture while creating a unique, personal piece filled with history and meaning. 

Open to all skill levels, it’s the ideal space to explore and express your art in a deep and meaningful way. Requirements: No prior drawing experience needed. Just come with an open heart and a willingness to connect with art and let your creativity flow.

Immerse in a unique artistic experience where history, color, and creativity converge. In this workshop, you'll have the opportunity to choose two activities that interest you the most and connect through your art: a traditional Andean mask, an Andean amulet, a painting inspired by the landscapes and symbols of the Andes, or creating a recycled card or postcard decorated with dried flower petals.

Guided by experts, you'll learn techniques to capture the colors, shapes, and patterns characteristic of the Andean worldview. While painting and decorating, you'll also hear local stories and ancestral myths that will deepen your understanding of the cultural significance behind each element you choose to create. Andean masks, used in celebrations and ceremonies, symbolize spiritual connection and protection. Amulets represent energy and tradition, while paintings capture the essence of Andean landscapes and symbols. The recycled card or postcard decorated with dried flowers offers a unique way to express your creativity while respecting the environment, making it a meaningful addition to the workshop. This workshop is an opportunity to develop your creativity and connect with Andean culture while creating a unique, personal piece filled with history and meaning.

Fluency in Spanish is not a prerequisite for the IVHQ Quito program, however, learning basic conversational Spanish will help you maximize the benefit of your program. Volunteers interested in taking Spanish lessons can schedule these directly with the local staff once in Quito at the program orientation. The language lessons are tailored to each volunteer’s current level of Spanish. The cost is very affordable and offered exclusively to IVHQ volunteers.

You will participate in 20 intensive classes that last approximately 4 hours each.

This full day experience begins bright and early. From 8:30 AM until 2:00 PM you will experience:

Historic Center Walking Tour
Explore the heart of Quito's Old Town, including Plaza Grande (Independence Square), the iconic Basílica del Voto Nacional, and the cobbled colonial streets that tell centuries of history.

Local Museum Visit
Discover Ecuador’s rich heritage through a guided tour of a culturally significant museum featuring art, history, or indigenous traditions.

La Ronda Street Experience
Wander down one of Quito’s most charming streets, alive with local art, music, and traditional workshops. (Walking Tour)

Traditional Market Visit
Immerse yourself in the local flavors and culture with a visit to a bustling popular market. Taste authentic Ecuadorian flavors like locro de papa, empanadas, and more in a bustling local market.

Herbal Cleansing Experience (Optional)
Participate in a traditional Andean spiritual ritual performed by local women with ancestral knowledge at a city market. This energetic cleansing uses native herbs and is rooted in Indigenous healing practices passed down through generations.

Visit to a Local Andean Artisanal Market
Discover handmade crafts, paintings, and souvenirs while supporting local artists and artisans.

You'll return to the accommodation for an afternoon rest, and then pick up again from 6:30 PM to 9:30 PM with the following activities:

Evening Street Food Experience
End the day by visiting a popular night-time at a vibrant food spot, where you’ll sample Quito’s favorite street food in an authentic setting.

Panecillo Viewpoint
Enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of the city from this iconic hilltop and learn about the Virgin of El Panecillo monument.

This tour is available Saturday and Sunday (or any day of the week after your volunteer program finishes) and includes: Transportation during the activities, local guide, entrance fees to tourist sites. It does not include food and beverages, Herbal Cleansing Experience (optional).
