Arriving early or departing a few days after your program finishes in Guatemala? IVHQ makes it easy to be flexible with your arrival and departure dates by offering extra nights of accommodation that you can pre-book now.

If you have also booked a Private Room Upgrade during your volunteer program, you will be housed at the same accommodation you will be staying during your time on the program, so you can settle right in with no need to be moving around.

Note: If you'd like to stay in a private room during your whole program, please make sure you also include the Private Room Upgrade during your whole program. Otherwise, we'll ask you to move to a shared room during your program duration, which may also involve moving to an entirely different accommodation.

Want to make sure you visit all of the must-see sites that Guatemala has to offer? On the Mini Adventure, you'll see all of Guatemala's major hot spots in 1-week. This can can be added at the beginning or end of your volunteer program depending on your itinerary. You will be accompanied by a certified, bilingual tour guide for each trip, using Antigua as your home base between tours.

The 6-day adventure complements your volunteer experience, without the stress of trip planning! It will begin on Sunday and finish the following Saturday morning. Accommodation is included from the Saturday before your adventure begins.

PACAYA VOLCANO
Located just a short drive from Antigua, this excursion offers an unforgettable adventure to an active volcano, where you can witness its raw power, hike through lava fields, and take in stunning panoramic views. This tour is perfect for nature enthusiasts, adventure seekers, and those looking to experience the magic of volcanic landscapes. A memorable part of the Pacaya experience is the opportunity to roast marshmallows over the volcanic heat. The volcano's hot spots provide a unique and delicious experience as you cook marshmallows over the hot lava rock.

LAKE ATITLAN
The adventure begins with an early departure from Antigua, leading you to the picturesque basin of Panajachel after a two-hour journey. Upon arrival, check-in at the hotel, where the guide will gather the group for an exhilarating boat-taxi ride to the enchanting villages of San Juan and Santiago. Marvel at the stunning lake views as you explore San Juan's rich traditional weavings and visit Santiago's altar to Maximon, a unique Guatemalan deity. The afternoon is yours to freely explore the charms of Panajachel. You'll spend pend the night at a hotel in Panajechel.

CHICHICASTENANGO
Immerse in the vibrant Chichicastenango Market, held on Thursdays and Sundays in the town's central square. Witness the lively display of indigenous Mayans from various villages offering an array of handicrafts, colorful textiles, fresh local produce, and unique masks with animal motifs—ideal souvenirs. Enjoy one to two hours of free time to wander and admire the market's offerings before returning to Antigua, where you'll arrive in approximately 2 and a half hours. 

TIKAL ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE

During its heyday, Tikal boasted a population exceeding one hundred thousand. Discover the concealed secrets within its ruins, a hidden treasure unearthed in 1848 by Colonel Modesto Mendez and his expedition.

You'll take a short flight from Guatemala City to Santa Elena, where you'll meet your guide and travel to Tikal National Park, for yout two-day exploration that goes beyond typical sightseeing, delving into the deep history and architectural marvels of Tikal. Walk in the footsteps of the ancients as you uncover the mysteries of these remarkable constructions including temples, courtyards, and other Mayan structures including the Central Acropolis and the twin 'Q' and 'R' pyramids. Hear the stories of a once-thriving civilization and see the remnants of a city that stood the test of time.

At the end of your third day, you'll fly back to Guatemala City for your drive back to Antigua.


Important note:
The Mini Adventure is offered as an extension to your program duration and it’s an exciting experience that runs for 6 days/7 nights. This can be completed the week prior to your program beginning or the week after your program finishes. This means that if you want to volunteer for 2 weeks and add the Mini Adventure week to your itinerary, you’ll be hosted by the local team for a total of 3 weeks. Please note, if you complete this the week prior to your start date an extra night of accommodation will be required for the Saturday between this activity and your program starting, at an additional cost.

IVHQ and the local team do its best to make sure that volunteers can take part on tours together and, when possible, you will be joining a group of other tour participants. However, please note that participant numbers cannot be guaranteed. If you're traveling solo you're welcome to check with your Program Manager if other participants are signed up during your dates.

Enjoy a challenging 2-day trek and camping adventure on the active Acatangego Volcano. Located close to the city of Antigua, you’ll hike 11 miles (8 km) round-trip up the volcano with an elevation gain of 5,150 ft (1,500 meters). Be sure to pack your camera to capture the stunning views. On this one-of-a-kind experience, you'll enjoy neighboring volcanoes while camping at 13,000 ft (3,963 meters). You will depart from the local team's office at approximately 9 AM, and return around 1 PM the following day.

Embark on a two-day hiking adventure that promises a unique experience. Your journey begins with a scenic drive from Antigua to the town of La Soledad, marking the start of the ascent to the Acatenango volcano. Prepare for a challenging 11-mile (8 km), round-trip hike through four distinct microclimates, each revealing its own natural beauty.

Traverse steep trails cutting through cornfields and lily fields, gradually adapting to the demanding climb. Explore a cloud forest, home to ancient trees and diverse flora and fauna. Enjoy panoramic views of volcanoes such as Atitlán, Tolimán, San Pedro, Santa María, Santo Tomás, Tajumulco, and the Cuchumatanes mountain ranges.

Continue the journey through temperate coniferous forests and a tropical dry forest, observing remnants of trees felled by volcanic storms. The camp, strategically located at 12,300 ft (3750 m) below the tree line, offers stunning views of the Antigua Valley and the Fuego volcano. Relax, soak in the surroundings, and enjoy a camp dinner prepared by your guide.

Day two starts early with breakfast,  preparing you for the 45-minute ascent to the summit. Conquer a steeper, rock-strewn path exposed to constant winds shaping the peak. At the summit, witness a 360-degree view of the Guatemalan highlands, with the nearby Fuego volcano in constant eruption. Depending on weather conditions, spend at least 45 minutes at the summit before descending to La Soledad.

Opt for an alternate route during your descent, discovering different microclimates and a pleasant trail. Return to Antigua with ample time to explore the city's offerings in the afternoon and evening. Get ready for an adventure where each step reveals a new facet of Guatemala's captivating landscapes.

We recommend a good level of fitness as the hike goes through steep terrain at altitude.

Start this three-day adventure with an early transfer from Antigua to the charming Copán town, where you'll have the afternoon to discover its quaint charm. On Day 2, dive into the rich history of the region with a visit to the Copán Archaeological Park, unraveling the secrets of Mayan culture, and exploring the site's intricate ruins and fascinating hieroglyphics. Discovered in 1570 and declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1980, Copán is believed to be one of the most important sites of the Mayan civilization, that used to function as the political, civil, and religious centre of the Copán Valley.

Afterward, head to Macaw Mountain, a sanctuary dedicated to the conservation and rehabilitation of birds, who have mostly been rescued from the illegal bird trade or donated by individuals concerned about their condition or unable to care for them long-term. Returning to your hotel at 3:30 PM, the afternoon is yours to unwind. Day 3 kicks off with a 6:00 AM pick-up for a transfer back to Antigua, concluding a memorable journey filled with exploration and unforgettable experiences.

Your day begins early with a scenic drive through the highlands eventually reaching the laid-back town of Panajachel. You'll then board the boat to cruise to the welcoming town of San Pedro la Laguna. Here, you'll transition to a kayak for a leisurely paddle towards the white sand beaches of Las Cristalinas. Depending on the weather conditions, the journey may extend to the quaint village of San Marcos la Laguna, where you'll switch from kayaks to daypacks and hiking shoes.

The excitement continues as you follow the lake trail, meandering through villages and enjoying views of San Pedro, Toliman, and Atitlan volcanoes. Passing through San Marcos and Tzununa, you'll walk along the shoreline for about 1 1/2 hours, finally arriving at Jaibalito. Take a break with a satisfying lunch at a local restaurant, savoring authentic regional flavors.

As the day unfolds, a boat ride carries you back to Panajachel, where your private transport awaits to bring you back to Antigua.

You will depart at 8:00 AM for a full day's drive to Lanquin, where you can enjoy some relaxing time for the evening. On the second day, you will leave on a 4X4 ride for the Semuc Champey National Park. There you will enjoy a hike to “El Mirador”; Visit the Sumidero (where the river flows under the ground and back into the open), the Natural turquoise pools; an awesome tour of the Kamba caves; and tubing in the Cahabon river. On day three, you will return to Antigua early in the morning, with a stop at the Coffee Farm of Tito “La Finca la Esperanza” in Coban, and take a tour of the farm before we continue our return to Antigua.

Embark on a captivating journey to one of Guatemala's most stunning destinations, Semuc Champey National Park in Cobán. Your adventure begins with an 8:00 AM departure for a scenic drive, leading you to your hostel in Lanquin. Enjoy a relaxing evening, setting the stage for an exciting second day.

In a rugged 4X4, venture into Semuc Champey National Park for a day brimming with exploration. Hike to "El Mirador" for breathtaking views, visit the intriguing Sumidero where the river mysteriously flows underground and resurfaces, and marvel at the natural turquoise pools. Take an awe-inspiring tour of the Kamba caves and add a thrill by tubing down the Cahabon River.

As day three dawns, return to Antigua early in the morning, making a memorable stop at Tito's "La Finca la Esperanza" Coffee Farm in Cobán. Immerse yourself in a farm tour, gaining insights into the coffee-making process, before resuming your journey back to Antigua.

Your day kicks off with an early morning departure from Antigua, to then go on a scenic drive to the base of Acatenango Volcano, taking in picturesque countryside views. Upon reaching the volcano base, you'll receive a briefing on the day's activities. The heart of the adventure lies in the challenging 5-6 hour hike to Acatenango's summit, traversing diverse ecosystems and encountering local wildlife and unique vegetation.

At the summit, revel in the breathtaking panoramic views of Acatenango and its twin, Fuego Volcano, along with the surrounding landscapes, providing the perfect setting for lunch and photography. If conditions permit, you might witness the powerful volcanic activity of Fuego. Past volunteers feel that taking these lessons help immensely with day-to-day volunteer work and communicating with local people. Volunteers interested in taking Spanish lessons can arrange these directly with the IVHQ Program Manager prior to departure. The language lessons are tailored to each volunteer’s current level of Spanish and classes run from Monday through to Friday. The cost is very affordable and offered exclusively to IVHQ volunteers.

Want to make sure you visit all of the must-see sites that Guatemala has to offer? On the Mini Adventure, you'll see all of Guatemala's major hot spots in 1-week. This can can be added at the beginning or end of your volunteer program depending on your itinerary. You will be accompanied by a certified, bilingual tour guide for each trip, using Antigua as your home base between tours.

The 6-day adventure complements your volunteer experience, without the stress of trip planning! It will begin on Sunday and finish the following Saturday morning. Accommodation is included from the Saturday before your adventure begins.

PACAYA VOLCANO
Located just a short drive from Antigua, this excursion offers an unforgettable adventure to an active volcano, where you can witness its raw power, hike through lava fields, and take in stunning panoramic views. This tour is perfect for nature enthusiasts, adventure seekers, and those looking to experience the magic of volcanic landscapes. A memorable part of the Pacaya experience is the opportunity to roast marshmallows over the volcanic heat. The volcano's hot spots provide a unique and delicious experience as you cook marshmallows over the hot lava rock.

LAKE ATITLAN
The adventure begins with an early departure from Antigua, leading you to the picturesque basin of Panajachel after a two-hour journey. Upon arrival, check-in at the hotel, where the guide will gather the group for an exhilarating boat-taxi ride to the enchanting villages of San Juan and Santiago. Marvel at the stunning lake views as you explore San Juan's rich traditional weavings and visit Santiago's altar to Maximon, a unique Guatemalan deity. The afternoon is yours to freely explore the charms of Panajachel. You'll spend pend the night at a hotel in Panajechel.

CHICHICASTENANGO
Immerse in the vibrant Chichicastenango Market, held on Thursdays and Sundays in the town's central square. Witness the lively display of indigenous Mayans from various villages offering an array of handicrafts, colorful textiles, fresh local produce, and unique masks with animal motifs—ideal souvenirs. Enjoy one to two hours of free time to wander and admire the market's offerings before returning to Antigua, where you'll arrive in approximately 2 and a half hours. 

TIKAL ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE

During its heyday, Tikal boasted a population exceeding one hundred thousand. Discover the concealed secrets within its ruins, a hidden treasure unearthed in 1848 by Colonel Modesto Mendez and his expedition.

You'll take a short flight from Guatemala City to Santa Elena, where you'll meet your guide and travel to Tikal National Park, for yout two-day exploration that goes beyond typical sightseeing, delving into the deep history and architectural marvels of Tikal. Walk in the footsteps of the ancients as you uncover the mysteries of these remarkable constructions including temples, courtyards, and other Mayan structures including the Central Acropolis and the twin 'Q' and 'R' pyramids. Hear the stories of a once-thriving civilization and see the remnants of a city that stood the test of time.

At the end of your third day, you'll fly back to Guatemala City for your drive back to Antigua.


Important note:
The Mini Adventure is offered as an extension to your program duration and it’s an exciting experience that runs for 6 days/7 nights. This can be completed the week prior to your program beginning or the week after your program finishes. This means that if you want to volunteer for 2 weeks and add the Mini Adventure week to your itinerary, you’ll be hosted by the local team for a total of 3 weeks. Please note, if you complete this the week prior to your start date an extra night of accommodation will be required for the Saturday between this activity and your program starting, at an additional cost.

Enjoy a challenging 2-day trek and camping adventure on the active Acatangego Volcano. Located close to the city of Antigua, you’ll hike 11 miles (8 km) round-trip up the volcano with an elevation gain of 5,150 ft (1,500 meters). Be sure to pack your camera to capture the stunning views. On this one-of-a-kind experience, you'll enjoy neighboring volcanoes while camping at 13,000 ft (3,963 meters). You will depart from the local team's office at approximately 9 AM, and return around 1 PM the following day.

Embark on a two-day hiking adventure that promises a unique experience. Your journey begins with a scenic drive from Antigua to the town of La Soledad, marking the start of the ascent to the Acatenango volcano. Prepare for a challenging 11-mile (8 km), round-trip hike through four distinct microclimates, each revealing its own natural beauty.

Traverse steep trails cutting through cornfields and lily fields, gradually adapting to the demanding climb. Explore a cloud forest, home to ancient trees and diverse flora and fauna. Enjoy panoramic views of volcanoes such as Atitlán, Tolimán, San Pedro, Santa María, Santo Tomás, Tajumulco, and the Cuchumatanes mountain ranges.

Continue the journey through temperate coniferous forests and a tropical dry forest, observing remnants of trees felled by volcanic storms. The camp, strategically located at 12,300 ft (3750 m) below the tree line, offers stunning views of the Antigua Valley and the Fuego volcano. Relax, soak in the surroundings, and enjoy a camp dinner prepared by your guide.

Day two starts early with breakfast,  preparing you for the 45-minute ascent to the summit. Conquer a steeper, rock-strewn path exposed to constant winds shaping the peak. At the summit, witness a 360-degree view of the Guatemalan highlands, with the nearby Fuego volcano in constant eruption. Depending on weather conditions, spend at least 45 minutes at the summit before descending to La Soledad.

Opt for an alternate route during your descent, discovering different microclimates and a pleasant trail. Return to Antigua with ample time to explore the city's offerings in the afternoon and evening. Get ready for an adventure where each step reveals a new facet of Guatemala's captivating landscapes.

We recommend a good level of fitness as the hike goes through steep terrain at altitude.

Start this three-day adventure with an early transfer from Antigua to the charming Copán town, where you'll have the afternoon to discover its quaint charm. On Day 2, dive into the rich history of the region with a visit to the Copán Archaeological Park, unraveling the secrets of Mayan culture, and exploring the site's intricate ruins and fascinating hieroglyphics. Discovered in 1570 and declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1980, Copán is believed to be one of the most important sites of the Mayan civilization, that used to function as the political, civil, and religious centre of the Copán Valley.

Your day begins early with a scenic drive through the highlands eventually reaching the laid-back town of Panajachel. You'll then board the boat to cruise to the welcoming town of San Pedro la Laguna. Here, you'll transition to a kayak for a leisurely paddle towards the white sand beaches of Las Cristalinas. Depending on the weather conditions, the journey may extend to the quaint village of San Marcos la Laguna, where you'll switch from kayaks to daypacks and hiking shoes.

The excitement continues as you follow the lake trail, meandering through villages and enjoying views of San Pedro, Toliman, and Atitlan volcanoes. Passing through San Marcos and Tzununa, you'll walk along the shoreline for about 1 1/2 hours, finally arriving at Jaibalito. Take a break with a satisfying lunch at a local restaurant, savoring authentic regional flavors.

As the day unfolds, a boat ride carries you back to Panajachel, where your private transport awaits to bring you back to Antigua.

Marvel at the stunning lake views as you explore San Juan's rich traditional weavings and visit Santiago's altar to Maximon, a unique Guatemalan deity. The afternoon is yours to freely explore the charms of Panajachel.

The second day will be dedicated to the vibrant Chichicastenango Market, held on Thursdays and Sundays in the town's central square. Witness the lively display of indigenous Mayans from various villages offering an array of handicrafts, colorful textiles, fresh local produce, and unique masks with animal motifs—ideal souvenirs. Enjoy one to two hours of free time to wander and admire the market's offerings before returning to Antigua, where you'll arrive in approximately 2 and a half hours.

You will depart at 8:00 AM for a full day's drive to Lanquin, where you can enjoy some relaxing time for the evening. On the second day, you will leave on a 4X4 ride for the Semuc Champey National Park. There you will enjoy a hike to “El Mirador”; Visit the Sumidero (where the river flows under the ground and back into the open), the Natural turquoise pools; an awesome tour of the Kamba caves; and tubing in the Cahabon river. On day three, you will return to Antigua early in the morning, with a stop at the Coffee Farm of Tito “La Finca la Esperanza” in Coban, and take a tour of the farm before we continue our return to Antigua.

Embark on a captivating journey to one of Guatemala's most stunning destinations, Semuc Champey National Park in Cobán. Your adventure begins with an 8:00 AM departure for a scenic drive, leading you to your hostel in Lanquin. Enjoy a relaxing evening, setting the stage for an exciting second day.

In a rugged 4X4, venture into Semuc Champey National Park for a day brimming with exploration. Hike to "El Mirador" for breathtaking views, visit the intriguing Sumidero where the river mysteriously flows underground and resurfaces, and marvel at the natural turquoise pools. Take an awe-inspiring tour of the Kamba caves and add a thrill by tubing down the Cahabon River.

As day three dawns, return to Antigua early in the morning, making a memorable stop at Tito's "La Finca la Esperanza" Coffee Farm in Cobán. Immerse yourself in a farm tour, gaining insights into the coffee-making process, before resuming your journey back to Antigua.

Without knowing what the right price is to pay in Guatemala for an airport transfer, you can easily get overcharged, or spend a long time trying to haggle a decent price. Enjoy a stress free ride back to the airport arranged by our local team. 

You’ll be picked up from your volunteer accommodation at your chosen time, and driven directly to La Aurora International Airport (GUA) with plenty of time for your flight. Transfers to other destinations can also be arranged if you are heading somewhere else.
