Project details
Passionate about fashion and want to help make it more sustainable as a volunteer in Greece - Athens? International Volunteer HQ’s Ethical Fashion project gives you the opportunity to join an amazing community of organizations that open up employment to refugees and survivors of human trafficking. You’ll be helping advocate for ethical and sustainable fashion in today’s world of fast fashion and directly supporting the upcycling and recycling fashion movement in Greece.
What to expect and how you'll make an impact
Efforts within the fashion industry have been made to start adopting more sustainable practices, such as creating sustainable collections with recycled materials, donating surplus clothing, and upcycling out of date collections. Upcycled fashion takes clothes which would have otherwise been thrown away and reinvents them. As a result of this, clothes are repurposed to create new garments, rather than being thrown into landfills.
You will volunteer directly with local non-profit organizations that are creating ethically made fashion apparel from upcycled materials, distributing repurposed clothing, and offering equal employment opportunities to refugees and survivors of human trafficking.
Volunteers are needed for manual tasks in the collection factory, sorting and cleaning clothes. As well as communication and coordination support in workshops and social media support in content creation and filmmaking.
Your tasks will vary day-to-day but can include:
- Collecting clothing from donation drop-off points and transporting it back to the sorting factory
- Sorting donated clothing into relevant categories. Good condition clothing is cleaned and donated
- Clothing which can’t be donated is cleaned and passed on to the upcycling team to create new clothing and other fashion items
- Packaging and sealing clothing bundles for donation
- Distributing clothing bundles
- Facilitating and organizing events and workshops

What recent volunteers said about their IVHQ experience
IVHQ has changed my perspective to life as a person. Meeting up with like minded people and similar in values no matter where they come from is so refreshing. On the other hand, working with refugees and understanding a lot about them has broadened my scope of knowledge and has made me aware of the struggles one can have and how just a smile can go a long way into changing their day.
I loved volunteering with IVHQ. The Greece Program was amazing. I loved exploring the various food markets in Athens and I feel extremely good because I know I did something for others.
I can confidently say volunteering was the best decision of my life and I have already signed up for another 12 weeks in Bali with someone I met on the trip. I was a very anxious person before going but I believe this trip has helped settle it. I’ve become so much more confident, I feel I learned so much from the people volunteering at the dog shelter, the dogs, everyone I met, and just from being in Greece for so long. I got to immerse myself in their lifestyle which was very different but amazing. I constantly pushed myself out of my comfort zone and in return it was the most rewarding and impactful trip of my life.
IVHQ did an amazing job with their guidance and preparation resources, I hope to work with them again. The local team did exceptional work. Their communication and organization were outstanding, making it easy for volunteers to contribute effectively.
Volunteering at a dog shelter in Greece was an incredibly rewarding experience. The opportunity to work closely with the shelter's dedicated staff and the dogs in their care left a lasting impression on me. The shelter staff exhibited an unwavering commitment to the well-being of the dogs. Their passion and tireless efforts to provide food, shelter, and love to these animals were evident every day. Their dedication to creating a safe and nurturing environment for the dogs was truly inspiring.
During my time there, I had the chance to engage in various tasks, from feeding and grooming the dogs to taking them for walks and providing socialization. It was heartwarming to witness the positive changes in the dogs' behavior and demeanor as they received attention and care. Overall, my time volunteering at the dog shelter in Greece was a life-changing experience, thanks in large part to the incredible local staff, and IVHQ, and their dedication. I am truly grateful for the opportunity to have been a part of this meaningful endeavor, and I hope to return in the future to continue supporting their vital work.
I went in to my volunteering experience not knowing what volunteering with homeless people would be like. This project opened my eyes to the reality of homelessness. The locals organizers' passion for their work was inspiring and makes me want to continue volunteering on projects like this. I was hesitant to volunteer as a solo traveler as I felt that I may feel lonely or homesick but the in-country volunteer coordinator was so helpful. The hostel is a great way to meet people and make great friends. I would highly recommend this trip to anyone wanting to volunteering in Greece.
