My daughter and I volunteered in Laos teaching English as an 18th Birthday and school graduation gift. This was her choice and she chose the location and program. It was such a wonderful bonding time for us as a mum/daughter. As a mum, to see your young adult thrive in her relationships with the children/young people and to see her excel in my own chosen profession of teaching was wonderful.
To anyone who is hesitant to join a volunteer program, I would say just do it! Just sign up before you can overthink it because it will end up being the most rewarding thing you will do! I have found that volunteering is one of the best ways to travel, because you are meeting like-minded people, who also want to make a positive difference which makes it easy to connect with your peers and make friends.
This experience allowed me to really be immersed in and understand Lao culture - but beyond that, it allowed me to see the world through their eyes. I feel happier, stronger, more resilient, and more grateful after completing my volunteer project then I ever have before.
Going into this experience I hoped to be able to help make a positive impact as well as broaden my cultural understanding. Participating in this program exceeded all of my expectations as it challenged me to get out of my comfort zone, meet and befriend people from all over the world with similar mindsets, immerse my self in Lao culture (and learn more about the country and their beliefs), while also allowing me to explore nearby areas and tourist attractions in my free time. This experience has opened my eyes to a different, yet so joyful, way of life. It has made me so grateful that I was able to volunteer and help communities who may otherwise have not received this help if it were not for IVHQ, volunteers and the in-county team. For anyone wanting to volunteer through IVHQ I would most definitely recommend Laos as a destination. My advice for anyone hesitant would to be don’t be nervous - just do it. It is an incredible experience for anyone who is willing to get involved.
