What recent volunteers said about their IVHQ experience

SG
Sarah Goffin

The past couple of years have been extremely hard for me personally: I lost a dear friend from overworking and my corporate role became soulless. To keep pushing forward, I had to shut down parts of myself just to keep earning an income.

I came to this experience to help others and reconnect with myself. This experience gave me all of that and more: despite never living with anyone other than my family or partners, I loved living in the homestay with the other volunteers and truly became a part of the family.

I have also been so inspired by the students: some have no bags and limited books, but they show up everyday in their spare time to keep learning English. As it's purely volunteer-run (and the Nepali teachers don't speak English), they are so eager to learn when the opportunity is there.

The gratitude, bravery and determination of the students was so inspiring: with the youngest students being 10 and the oldest at 73, they always pushed themselves to try, even if sometimes they got it wrong.

I hope that I can take what I've learned and keep practicing it as I go back to my daily life. For anyone thinking about this programme, you should absolutely do it! I truly feel like I am coming out of this a better, more connected person.

My IVHQ program manager was so helpful and was always very available for me. I appreciated the constant help so much. The local team was amazing and everything was so seamless and well-organized. They were always available and answered my questions so quickly and in-depth. The hospital in Pokhara was amazing. I loved volunteering there so much and learned a ton for my nursing program. All the medical staff were so welcoming and engaging. I really appreciated how amazing this opportunity was and everything I gained from it.

My host family was amazing. So welcoming and kind. They helped me with so many things, and they gave me advice for adjusting to Pokhara. They showed me around to places and told me about things to do. They offered to take me to a volunteer school and a clinic in addition to my volunteer placement and I really enjoyed seeing these places. All-around so wonderful.

I cannot say enough good things about the Nepal IVHQ Medical Elective program. So many amazing learning opportunities with the hospital and beautiful places to visit. I gained so much experience volunteering in the ER for my future career as an ER Nurse. Every single person I encountered was so wonderfully welcoming, and I formed relationships that will last. My trek was an incredible journey, and I felt very supported by the people I did it with. From start to finish, this trip was perfectly organized and packed with memories I will cherish forever. I recommend this program to everyone.

I think that traveling and/or volunteering is something that enriches every person in many ways, but what you actually gain from it also depends on your personal mindset, motivation and goals. For me it was the perfect experience at the perfect time in my life. Before leaving I had taken some time to reflect on my own motivation and my expectations and I am happy to say that they were almost all met. Two weeks were a bit too short to do/see everything I wanted to do in Nepal, which is a good thing because now I have reasons to go back. I feel like a dream came true and new dreams were born :) Perfect!

I have learnt so much about Nepalese culture and truly admire the women I taught having seen how they balanced learning a new language as well as continuing with the rest of their days (work, more school, family). My biggest advice would be to go in to the experience with an open mind and try as many new things as you can.
