The local coordinator and team were amazing. The coordinator was warm, welcoming, and very organized. She made everyone feel right at home and handled any issue that came up. I would highly recommend this program to anyone looking for a smooth experience.

Project details
Ready to get on board as a Surf, Skate and Swim volunteer in South Africa - Table View? International Volunteer HQ’s Surf, Skate and Swim project is an exciting way for volunteers to make a meaningful difference to the lives of children from disadvantaged communities. Volunteers gain experience in youth work and teaching while providing opportunities for students to learn valuable life skills and teamwork through surfing, skateboarding and swimming.
What to expect and how you'll make an impact
The Surf, Skate & Swim Project offers fun, engaging activities with real impact for students from low-income communities. By keeping kids engaged after school and offering confidence-building experiences, volunteers play a vital role in bringing joy, structure, and support into the lives of vulnerable young people who often do not get to experience physical education.
As a Surf, Skate & Swim volunteer, you’ll help teach essential life skills and teamwork through not only surfing, skateboarding, and swimming but sports and games, challenges and cooking and computer lessons. You’ll guide students aged 10 to 15 - many of whom see this program as the highlight of their day. Participation is earned - students must attend school regularly, show good behavior in class, and stay committed to their studies. This creates a powerful incentive for academic engagement, supported by your encouragement and presence.
This project is run in the afternoons from Tuesday to Thursday, you can expect to spend mornings assisting in the Childcare project or having surf/skating lessons. You’ll get a surf lesson per week included in your program fee, and extra lessons can be arranged through our local team at an additional cost. All outdoor activities are weather-dependent, and you’ll take part in indoor activities or plan future activities if the weather isn’t suitable.
You should bring your own wetsuit with you, as the wetsuits on the project are given to the children first. If you don’t have one, you can buy one in Cape Town - if you don’t want to take it home with you, you can donate it to the project when you leave.
The Surf, Skate & Swim project is not available during the school holidays. If you apply for the Surf, Skate & Swim project during the school holidays, you will be switched to the Holiday Club project.
School Holidays:
- 28th June - 20th July 2025
- 4th October - 12th October 2025

What recent volunteers said about their IVHQ experience
It was a great experience where I made meaningful connections with other volunteers and the school I volunteered at. It helped me understand that I would like to continue volunteering back at home as well and continue giving back to those who need it.
I gained a new perspective on life and I feel a sense of gratitude! I would advise anyone to jump on this opportunity if they are considering.
The best part of my trip was exploring Cape Town with the other volunteers. Through helping the kids that are from a different culture, I could see what it’s like compared to how school was back home for me and kids in the USA.
