What recent volunteers said about their IVHQ experience

RW
Rex Wardle

Volunteering with IVHQ is an opportunity to make a real impact on communities in need. As well as providing assistance to communities in need, volunteering provides an opportunity for personal growth and perspective that can be imparted on others in a positive chain reaction. The communities you immerse yourself in are extremely friendly and welcoming, as are the fellow volunteers.

I would recommend people do undertake 2 week minimum volunteering stints as it allows for a greater impact. My Swahili was just beginning to improve and I was getting to know the students better and then our placement finished. I felt I had a positive impact on the students and teachers learning however it would have been beneficial to stay for a bit longer.

I gained so much from this experience. I was able to witness the incredible differences in heath care between Tanzania and Australia, opening my eyes up further to the huge health disparities between first and third world countries. This information will be beneficial throughout the completion of my nursing and public health promotion uni degree. Additionally, I was able to connect with local people at the hospital, and observe different practices and approaches to health care. I not only gained knowledge, but I gained further perspective, empathy, and a motivation to help create more long term change to these under resourced hospitals (and childcares).

My advice to someone joining the program is to embrace everything with an open mind! It is all an incredible experience and you are so lucky to have the opportunity to partake in a program like this, you will love it.

GO! Do it tired, do it scared, do it busy, do it alone - just do it. Best experience of my life.

I was initially hesitant because of many safety concerns and a very busy routine back home but I found the time and have absolutely no regrets. I felt super safe and supported throughout my entire program. This has been a forever dream of mine and I feel so blessed that I actually got to experience this.

The local team always went above and beyond to support us volunteers and ensured we had the best possible experiences. They were always willing to help and would reply extremely fast if you were trying to get in contact with one of them. There was always plenty of food for everyone which was great and the meals were delicious. I think the soup was a favorite for all volunteers so sometimes there wasn't enough for everyone. Potentially more variety could be beneficial for those staying for longer durations.

The accommodation was great! I had the best time, was super comfortable and felt at home there. It was pretty clean majority of the time and felt super safe the whole time I was there.

I left Tanzania with a new outlook on life, a full heart and teary eyes... I definitely have a home away from home now.

I feel like it was such an eye opening experience and I really loved learning about the culture. I was so nervous to begin with but really believe it has helped me grow. I was put out my comfort zone and I’d definitely do it again.
