What recent volunteers said about their IVHQ experience
I was ready to roll up my sleeves and dig into a new environment and meet new people, I wasn't looking for :Pina coladas served on a silver tray under palm fronds. For me it was just the right amount of immersion into something new. To have this positive experience at the age of 75 is really appreciated. To be able to meet and talk to so many different people, Buddhist Novices, retired German social worker, UK construction worker, Laos teachers and students, French, Australian and UK students, etc, etc, is the ultimate luxury. On top of everything else, you get to play petanque once a week.
This experience give the meaning and the answer of to many questions of my life. But the nos amazing thing it’s the family I made in Laos. And if you are maybe doubting of coming I promise Laos is the best option, the most amazing and save place. I believe that god made me the most lucky girl for meeting this people in Laos and spending there 7 weeks. I am so grateful and excited to come back.
Going into this experience I hoped to be able to help make a positive impact as well as broaden my cultural understanding. Participating in this program exceeded all of my expectations as it challenged me to get out of my comfort zone, meet and befriend people from all over the world with similar mindsets, immerse my self in Lao culture (and learn more about the country and their beliefs), while also allowing me to explore nearby areas and tourist attractions in my free time. This experience has opened my eyes to a different, yet so joyful, way of life. It has made me so grateful that I was able to volunteer and help communities who may otherwise have not received this help if it were not for IVHQ, volunteers and the in-county team. For anyone wanting to volunteer through IVHQ I would most definitely recommend Laos as a destination. My advice for anyone hesitant would to be don’t be nervous - just do it. It is an incredible experience for anyone who is willing to get involved.
I spent five weeks volunteering in Luang Prabang, Laos, and it's probably one of the best things I've ever done. In fact, I wish I'd stayed longer. My five weeks have been absolutely incredible, and I'll always remember them with joy. I loved the programme, the daily routine and every moment of my time there.
When I signed up for teaching English, I remember thinking about how much of a bond I'd be able to create with the students (which, by the way, has surpassed all my expectations). However, I didn't really think about the bond I'd create with the local team, with other volunteers or with the local Laotian English teachers. All the people I've met along the way have been incredible and I've learnt so so much from everyone. So, for new volunteers, I'd advice approaching all the locals who you're in contact with and trying to establish a relationship with them, because Laotians are full of joy, happiness and only want to spread love. I think some of these connections are some of the most special ones I have, and I'm already thinking about the day when I can go back to LPB.
I’ve managed to get out of my comfort zone. I was worried about traveling alone but I never once felt alone. I’ve made lifelong friendships, learnt a lot about different cultures. If you are hesitant please don’t. It’s very well organized, safe and the local team are like a family. Amazing human beings.
