What recent volunteers said about their IVHQ experience

The volunteer coordinators were so helpful - I knew they would answer any questions and they always answered my texts very promptly. They were friendly too and I felt in safe hands

The placement staff were very good at explaining how what I was doing was helping them, even if it was a small task.

I had an amazing time visiting a country that had never been on our family holiday list, getting to know some lovely people, and learning about their history and environment. I have memories for life from the whole experience and felt very supported throughout. As a solo traveller, it was helpful to know so much in advance about the program and then have regular contact whilst I was there. I also left feeling I had contributed something in my time there - but the timings meant I still had time to explore too. It’s the best way I can think of to try out volunteering and a new country and has given me so much more than just visiting on a package holiday.

This was an all around enriching experience. I learned about the culture, history, current events and met many "locals" and had genuine conversations and interactions. I liked being able to travel and also give back to the community.

The local team provided information via email and a phone call. Our Coordinator was welcoming and provided a wealth of information to help us learn about Puerto Rico's culture, history and current events. They gave many suggestions and guidance to make the most of our free time, and showed genuine interest in us and our volunteer and travel experience.

I was able to meet many Puerto Ricans who shared with us information about the history in Puerto Rico as well as current events and their impact. I learned about the CRES project to restore indigenous plants and knowledge as well as the mission to restore the coral reef, the shoreline and natural areas. I learned about the Taíno people and the importance of ensuring laws protect undiscovered artifacts. I was able to observe the kindness, strength and compassion of Puerto Ricans. These are just a few examples of the many impacts this experience had on me.

Communication before, during and after our stay was excellent. Desk staff were available, helpful and friendly. The kitchenette was convenient and saved us time and money on our food. We had a private room and I'm so glad we paid the extra for it.

My advice to a volunteer would be to go into the experience focusing on what you can do to help the organization you're assigned to. It's more about them and not you and your experience because they are dealing with insurmountable issues each day and you're a temporary visitor to their situation. Listen and learn. When they give you information, remember it and ask follow up questions about what they are talking about.

I feel as if I gained more insight about the country I was volunteering in. The more you know about a country and its citizens the more respect and appreciation you tend to gain. My advice would be to always come opened minded and make the best of your experience.
