This program is ideal for:

Adventure-seeking, nature-loving volunteers eager to step out of their comfort zones and make a meaningful impact on wildlife conservation and habitat protection.

Project details

Immerse yourself in the untamed landscapes of Botswana as a Wildlife Conservation volunteer, studying Africa’s most iconic species in their natural habitat. Play a vital role in protecting indigenous wildlife and preserving critical ecosystems while observing elephants, zebras, giraffes, lions, leopards, and hyenas in the wild. Living remotely alongside dedicated conservationists, you’ll gain hands-on experience in expanding protected areas and contributing to the preservation of Southern Africa’s rich biodiversity.

What to expect and how you'll make an impact

Set within a sanctuary for Africa’s most majestic species, this experience offers an authentic immersion in the wilderness. You’ll be surrounded by expansive landscapes and native wildlife, all while playing a vital role in the area’s conservation efforts and creating lasting memories. As part of the Botswana program, volunteers will work on an unfenced private game reserve in the Tuli Block, actively participating in the land’s rewilding and the restoration of its diverse wildlife. This collaborative initiative seeks to achieve the ultimate goal of enhancing biodiversity in Southern Africa.

Your work day will be divided between early morning and late afternoon tasks, assisting with research, conservation projects and wildlife observation, with activities that can include:

  • Conducting mammal and bird surveys
  • Performing anti-poaching patrols
  • Identifying animal prints
  • Studying migration patterns throughout the year
  • Conservation efforts of autochthonous plant species
  • Develop elephant identikits
  • Monitoring camera traps and document nocturnal activities
  • Assist with waterhole construction, soil erosion control and road maintenance
  • Observing wildlife in their natural habitat

Volunteers will also have the chance to participate in sleep-outs, where you’ll experience the magic of Africa’s starlit skies, witness breathtaking sunsets and sunrises over the plains, and fall asleep beneath the vast expanse of the African sky, serenaded by the sounds of nearby wildlife.

Please note, these are wild animals. You should not expect to conduct hands-on research or interact directly with them.

Human activity has altered almost 75% of the earth’s surface and around 1 million animal and plant species are threatened with extinction. Nature is critical to our survival. Location

Volunteer Abroad in Botswana with IVHQ

Location

The IVHQ Botswana Wildlife Conservation project is set deep within the remote Central Tuli Block, far from civilization and urban areas. This secluded region, nestled along the Limpopo River in eastern Botswana, is renowned for its untamed wilderness, diverse wildlife, and breathtaking landscapes. Characterized by rugged terrain, rocky outcrops, riverine forests, and vast open savannas, it offers a truly off-the-grid experience where nature thrives undisturbed.

Arrival and orientation

The program begins on the first and third Monday of each month, with volunteers arriving in Polokwane, South Africa, the Sunday before their start date. As the closest major city and airport to the Tuli Block project, Polokwane serves as the designated meeting point. Volunteers can fly into Polokwane International Airport (PTG) or arrive overland, with a pre-arranged pick-up included.

Upon arrival, you’ll be transferred to a guesthouse for an overnight stay. That evening, an online orientation will introduce you to the volunteer project, explain the logistics and the plan for the following day. Accommodation and dinner on Sunday are included in your program fee.

The journey to the project site begins on Monday after breakfast. A private shuttle will transport you from the guesthouse, stopping along the way for snacks, drinks, a local SIM card, and any essentials you may need for your time in remote Tuli Block. The three-hour drive to the South Africa-Botswana border includes a short break, followed by an unpaved and bumpy stretch—so be prepared for a slow and rugged ride.

When you reach the South African side of the border, you’ll meet your project leader, who will guide you through the exit and entry procedures at immigration. Once you cross into Botswana, the adventure truly begins. The final stretch—a scenic one-hour drive to the project site—takes you through the vast savannah, offering your first glimpses of the region’s wildlife.

When you arrive at the project site, you’ll be welcomed by the local staff and given a brief orientation covering local rules, safety guidelines and project expectations. After settling into your accommodation at the camp, you’ll have the rest of the day to relax and prepare for the experiences ahead.

Volunteer schedule example

Sunday: Online orientation in Polokwane.

Monday: Journey to Botswana. Upon arrival, orientation and introduction to the project.

Weekdays & Weekends: Volunteers work approximately 6 hours a day, split between early morning and early afternoon, with a long lunch break to avoid the midday heat.

7:00 AM Breakfast at the volunteer camp.
7:30 AM Depart for morning work on the reserve.
11:00 AM Return to the accommodation to clean up before lunch.
11:30 AM - 12:00 PM Lunch served.
3:00 PM - 5:30 PM Afternoon work on the reserve, followed by return to camp for clean-up.
6:30 PM Dinner at the volunteer camp.

During lunch and the early afternoon, you’ll have free time to unwind—whether it’s diving into a good book, relaxing, playing games, or even taking a refreshing nap! The late afternoon often ends with a stunning sunset from a rocky outcrop, and if the weather cooperates, evenings are spent gazing at the starry sky around a cozy campfire.

Accommodation and WiFi

For their first night, volunteers stay in a comfortable guesthouse in Polokwane, with private rooms designed for a relaxing stay. Couples, friends, and family traveling together will be accommodated in the same room. The guesthouse is clean, well-equipped, and provides everything needed for a short visit, including bedding and complimentary WiFi. Polokwane, the capital city of Limpopo Province, offers a blend of modern amenities and a laid-back atmosphere, making it an ideal stop for both business and leisure travelers. With a range of facilities, it’s a convenient and welcoming base for those passing through the region.

In Botswana, volunteers stay in a fully equipped semi-permanent tented camp. Each tent is shared with 1 to 5 other volunteers of the same gender, though couples can be accommodated together in twin-share tents. The safari-style tents feature single and bunk beds, with sheets and pillows provided. Volunteers should bring their own sleeping bags, especially during the winter months (May to September), as temperatures can drop significantly at night and in the early morning.

The camp offers shared bathroom facilities with hot and cold showers and flush toilets. There is a communal area for meals, relaxation, and reading, as well as a beautiful boma for evenings around the fire. The camp operates on solar power, and there is a charging station available for devices.

The kitchen is equipped with gas appliances, and all meals are provided. A highlight of the experience is pizza night, featuring delicious homemade pizzas from the wood-fired oven.

WiFi is not available at the volunteer camp, so volunteers are encouraged to purchase an e-SIM before arrival or a South African SIM card in Polokwane. Keep in mind that reception is often spotty and slow due to the remoteness of the area.

Meals

Get ready to enjoy wholesome meals and a true taste of local hospitality during your adventure!

In Polokwane, enjoy a delicious plated dinner on Sunday evening and a refreshing breakfast the next morning, both catered by your guesthouse. Relax in comfort as your meals are served directly to your room, making your stay even more enjoyable.

In Botswana, volunteers enjoy three hearty meals a day at their volunteer camp, offering a delicious blend of local flavors and international favorites. Mornings begin with a self-service breakfast, including porridge, fresh fruit salad, bread with spreads, cereals, and a steaming cup of tea or coffee to start the day right. These drinks are available at the accommodation throughout the day, ensuring you can enjoy a refreshing break whenever you need it.

Lunch and dinner are home-cooked delights, lovingly prepared by a talented local cook. Expect flavorful dishes like tender chicken with vegetables, curries, burgers, lasagna with fresh salad, and a traditional braai (barbecue) served with “pap,” a staple dish made from corn flour, similar to polenta. For a special treat, enjoy homemade pizzas baked in a traditional woodfire oven.

The local team is happy to accommodate any special dietary requests—just let us know your requirements in your application so they can prepare accordingly. However, due to the remote location, meals may differ from what you’re used to at home. Flexibility is key, and volunteers staying for a longer duration should expect some meal repetition.

What recent volunteers said about their IVHQ experience

WM
Wendy Mclees

As we were so rural, accommodation was rustic. But the staff were amazing in keeping it clean. The only real problem I had was with the flies which were out of their control. Every meal I had was amazing considering we were so far from any village/shop. The cook was brilliant!

Some of the work I was expected to do I found difficult sometimes because of my age. I had a go at everything, but sometimes it was too physical for me. But the local team were amazing, full of encouragement, respect for my age and fitness level, extremely helpful and caring.

Go for it! I’m 73 and have never experienced anything like it. I loved the whole experience which has left me wanting to do more traveling. It’s given my confidence an amazing boost.

I gained an insight into what it’s like to manage all the aspects of wildlife, and how much work is needed. I was so happy to do my part to help keep the animals safe, happy and healthy.
