This program is ideal for:

Compassionate, patient and caring volunteers. Although you will be working closely with the local placement staff, it’s important that you have relevant experience working in special education.

Project details

Inspired to be a Special Education volunteer in Jamaica? International Volunteer HQ’s Special Education project empowers volunteers to assist in children who need extra educational support in local classrooms in Jamaica. Volunteers gain experience supporting children with learning and developmental difficulties or behavioural disorders while providing them with individual academic assistance and encouragement that can make a huge difference to their lives.

What to expect and how you'll make an impact

Many children in Jamaica grow up with undiagnosed learning difficulties and developmental or behavioral disorders. Academic support and better identification resources make a huge difference to the lives of young people facing these challenges. The aim of the Special Education project is to ensure all students are engaged in the school curriculum and continuing to develop. By addressing their individual differences and needs, volunteers can help students get the assistance they require.

As a Special Education volunteer you’ll help at a local elementary school with children, mostly aged between 8 and 10, who need more support in the classroom. Volunteer duties vary but can include:

  • Assisting local staff
  • Teaching groups of students in unique and creative ways
  • Providing one-on-one tutoring for individualized learning
  • Helping with reading and writing

Please note that during the school holidays period this project temporarily closes from April 17th - 25th, and July 7th - August 31st. You will need to choose another project to support if you can only travel in these times, and our Childcare, Veterinary Care, and Business and Community Development projects are available year-round!

The biggest impact was the relationships I formed with the people around me - working with the children and just being someone they can lean on. Do it, I honestly couldn't trade anything in the world for this experience.

Location

Volunteer Abroad in Jamaica with IVHQ

Location

On the world stage, Jamaica is the star of the Caribbean. Home to the Rastafarian religion and culture, reggae music and known for its sporting efforts, it also boasts dazzling beaches, plentiful wildlife and being the backdrop for many James Bond films. It has long been a popular tourist destination. But despite all of this, Jamaica has a history of slavery, unemployment and slow economic development that are still in the process of being remedied today. Volunteers are needed to provide support for people who face the challenges of living in low-income communities and to help address socioeconomic inequalities so this island nation can continue to grow and prosper.

Tucked up on the stunning north-eastern coast is the parish of St Mary where IVHQ’s Jamaica program is based. Volunteer projects are located in St Ann and St Mary, within 10 to 50 minutes from the volunteer accommodation and close to the port town of Ocho Rios, which is a resort and cruise ship harbor and has plenty of restaurants and craft markets which volunteers can explore in their free time.

Arrival and orientation

The program orientation begins on the first and third Monday of each month and volunteers need to arrive in Jamaica on the Sunday before orientation.

After you have registered for the program, please book your flights to arrive at the Sangster International Airport (MBJ) which is the closest airport to the volunteer accommodation. Airport pick up is provided on Sundays only.

When you arrive, you will be greeted at the airport by a member of the local team and taken to the volunteer accommodation in St Mary (around 1.5 - 2 hours away). Your accommodation is covered by your Program Fee and includes the night before your program orientation.

If you are travelling in Jamaica prior to your volunteer program, you will need to liaise with the local team to arrange a pick up from your location, or make your own way to the volunteer accommodation.

Orientation is provided by our Jamaica team at the volunteer accommodation. Orientation begins at 9:00 AM Monday morning and covers everything you need to know for your volunteer program in Jamaica – an introduction to Jamaica, Jamaican customs, rules and expectations, safety, travel opportunities in Jamaica, and an introduction to your project and placement. The orientation will also give you a chance to meet other volunteers and swap contact details for weekend travel and socialising.
