I was able to take the risk and enjoy since day 1 - every single part of it. I would advice others to do it because the growth is visible in many aspects. Not only personal, experiencing something so interesting in a very different country, but also how you can open your eyes to new cultures and people from different parts of the world. They have the same positive intentions and good heart as you, so it is easy to build meaningful connections.

What recent volunteers said about their IVHQ experience
I really appreciated the information provided by IVHQ in advance via email. The zoom meeting a few weeks before the start was also very helpful in clarifying any open questions.
The local team was very helpful and friendly, and the orientation day was well organized and a good start to working as a volunteer.
I'm very grateful to have had this experience. The accommodation in the Maasai village was truly fantastic. The climate in the little boma was great. I had solar power to charge my phone. It had a toilet and shower, and the bed was comfortable. Everything was great!
The food in the Maasai village was very European-style, which I very much appreciated. Unfortunately, I had side effects from the malaria prophylaxis and had little appetite for a few days. As a result, I couldn't always eat all of the food offered, or only a very small portion. I hope the Maasai didn't take this badly.
Personally, I'm glad I dared to participate in the program and leave my comfort zone. It's a different culture, and you have to be willing to make sacrifices compared to your home life. But that wasn't a problem for me. I was welcomed with open arms and would recommend this experience to everyone around me.
Volunteering with IVHQ is an opportunity to make a real impact on communities in need. As well as providing assistance to communities in need, volunteering provides an opportunity for personal growth and perspective that can be imparted on others in a positive chain reaction. The communities you immerse yourself in are extremely friendly and welcoming, as are the fellow volunteers.
I would recommend people do undertake 2 week minimum volunteering stints as it allows for a greater impact. My Swahili was just beginning to improve and I was getting to know the students better and then our placement finished. I felt I had a positive impact on the students and teachers learning however it would have been beneficial to stay for a bit longer.
I gained so much from this experience. I was able to witness the incredible differences in heath care between Tanzania and Australia, opening my eyes up further to the huge health disparities between first and third world countries. This information will be beneficial throughout the completion of my nursing and public health promotion uni degree. Additionally, I was able to connect with local people at the hospital, and observe different practices and approaches to health care. I not only gained knowledge, but I gained further perspective, empathy, and a motivation to help create more long term change to these under resourced hospitals (and childcares).
My advice to someone joining the program is to embrace everything with an open mind! It is all an incredible experience and you are so lucky to have the opportunity to partake in a program like this, you will love it.
